What are these cur, new, and temp folders in the mail directory?

The tmp directory stores files that are being delivered. This is just a temporary storage place

The new directory stores mail that has been delivered to a folder, but not seen by any mail application yet.

The cur directory stores mail which has been seen by a mail client but not deleted.
